Understanding autism
Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference that can affect how a person communicates, processes information, experiences sensory input, manages change, understands social situations and regulates emotions.
Autism can affect people in different ways. Some people may struggle with social communication, masking, anxiety, sensory overwhelm, routines, burnout, relationships, education or work. Others may have developed coping strategies over many years but still feel exhausted, misunderstood or unsure why certain situations feel difficult.
An autism assessment may be helpful if these experiences are affecting daily life, wellbeing, school, work, relationships or access to support. Assessment can provide clarity, a better understanding of needs, and recommendations for appropriate adjustments and support.
Differences in social communication, interaction, masking or reading social situations.
Sensory sensitivity, overwhelm, anxiety, shutdowns, meltdowns or emotional exhaustion.
Challenges with routines, change, relationships, school, employment or accessing support.
An assessment can help explain lifelong patterns in communication, sensory experiences, relationships, anxiety, masking, routines and social energy.
Families may seek assessment to support school planning, reasonable adjustments, EHCP discussions, university support or clearer recommendations.
Adults may need diagnostic clarity to request adjustments around communication, workload, sensory needs, meetings, flexibility or role expectations.
Autism can overlap with anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD and burnout. Assessment can help identify what support is most appropriate.
